excerpt from cardboard skribbles (19/03/2005)

And a shopping trolley tips over on the curb, rattles on the pavement while a child struggles to crawl out of it. The baseball bat a walking cane before it is proudly pointed into the night sky. Sporting a chemist's goggles, the child swings at the air for awhile. Street lights flicker, and the kid disappears into shade.

"Who cares if another trolley has gone missing, probably another homeless bloke has taken it."
        "I guess you're right."
The two employees take another sip of coffee out of their mugs. They both smile at each other and walk into the supermarket's back entrance.

        "Hi."
The cash register closes and a customer leaves.
"What are you doing here? It's two in the morning. Kids like you should be at home."
The child innocently smiles at the pretty girl working behind the cash register.
        "Seriously, go home kid."
        "Can I stay here?"
        "No, where are your parents?"
The kid begins to cry, and she doesn't know what to do.

        "I'm sorry."
She comforts the child in her arms.
        "How old are you?"
        "I don't know. I haven't had a birthday since I was five."
        "Do you like baseball?"

        "Is everything alright over there?"
She gets up, the kid clinging onto her leg, and begins ringing up the groceries from the conveyor belt. The customer looks troubled.
        "I'm sorry."
        "Is that your child?"
"No. Your total is fourteen fifty-one."

The cash register dings open, and a baseball bat is swung. The pretty girl falls over. The sight of blood is seen.
        "What the?"
Already on the conveyor belt, the child swings at the customer and watches him fall to the marble floor. Quickly emptying the cash register, the kid runs for the entrance and escapes, the goggles covering his eyes.

In an empty park, a child hands off a few hundred dollars to a teenager.
