I opened the window to
air the room out. I felt dizzy, and tired as well. It was still early
in the day, and I finished cleaning up the place. Everything seemed the
way it was. I didn't leave anything behind. Reassurance came by
checking so many times. When I left, I checked again. Nothing seems
different.
The streets were
awkwardly quiet. Few cars passed by, and out of the few, none had many
passengers. The clouds in the air disappeared, and it got hot all of a
sudden. I took off my hat and my gloves, and became very disappointed
where I realized it wasn't going to rain. I felt lonely, so I decided to
go somewhere less deserted.
Buses and cars began to
fill the streets, and I found myself sitting down on a bench.
Pedestrians came out of taxis and buses, and they began to control the
street lights as they crossed the streets. Cars now held impatient
drives, and they seemed angry with weak reasons. Voices filled the air,
and everybody seemed to be going to work. I decided I shouldn't be here.
I quickly entered a
building, and went on an elevator. I looked for the 13th floor, and
found it was mislabeled as the 14th floor. I put a sticker labeled "13"
on top of the button for the 13th floor, and smiled. I saw my reflection
on the elevator doors, and saw that I wasn't alone. Everyone was staring
at me, and I began to feel uneasy. The elevator finally stopped, and the
doors opened. Others came on, and it got crowded all of a sudden.
"Where's 14?"
I felt angry at the fact
that I didn't have enough stickers to fix the rest.
"13?"
I left the elevator as
the doors opened to the 13th floor. The other quickly followed me. He
seemed very confused. I wandered through the halls, my footsteps echoing
along, and passed by many people. It was very quiet, and hearing became
more sensitive. I opened a door.
The office was empty. I
looked around for awhile, and stared out the windows. I felt sick,
seeing how high I was. I quickly sat down and became happy at the fact
that the floor wasn't so far away.
"Hello."
The secretary came in.
She stared at me blankly, and smiled her usual smile.
"You're waiting for her?"
"Umm..."
"She never came in
today."
"Oh."
I got up, and left. As I
left the building, I put my hat back on. I can never imagine a world
without you, so I had to see it for myself.
